Rozhen Monastery is the largest temple in the Pyrenean region and one of the few medieval Bulgarian monasteries preserved relatively intact to this day. There is no precise data about the foundation of the monastery. It is believed to have existed as early as the 13th century. It is located about 5 km. from the town. The monastery is situated about 5 km from Melnik in the low parts of Pirin. It offers an exceptional view to the peaks of Pirin and Belasitsa, as well as to the popular Melnik mounds – pyramidal hills around the town, formed by erosion of clay soil. The church itself is a remarkable monument of culture.
