The remains of the fortress are located a kilometer from the town of Melnik. It is believed to have been built in the 13th century, and later expanded and fortified during the reign of Despot-Slav. The fortress covered an area of about 3,000 square meters and had the shape of an irregular polygon. Today a part of the eastern wall is preserved, as well as small parts of the southern and western walls.
