Rila Monastery “St. Yoan Rilski” is the largest monastery in Bulgaria, founded in the 10th century by St. Yoan.  and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Located in the Rila Mountains, it is an important cultural, religious and literary centre connected with Bulgarian history and revival. In the courtyard of the monastery is the 14th-century defensive tower of Hrelio, which is the oldest preserved building in the complex. The monastery suffered devastating fires in the 18th and 19th centuries, but was rebuilt and retains its unique architecture and artistic heritage. Today it is a symbol of Bulgarian spirituality and national identity, attracting tourists and pilgrims from all over the world.
