The region of Sandanski and Melnik is famous not only for its beautiful natural landscapes, but also for its rich wine tradition that attracts wine enthusiasts from all over the world. It is home to some of the most unique grape varieties in Bulgaria, which combine ancient heritage, innovation and perfect growing conditions. Let’s take a closer look at these iconic varieties:
This is one of the most ancient and iconic varieties of the region. The broad vine grows extremely well in the unique climatic conditions of Melnik – a warm, dry climate with limestone soils. Wines from this variety have light tannins and pronounced aromas of cherry, spices and even dried herbs. This grape has been the basis of Melnik’s wine fame since antiquity.
As the name suggests, this variety is an earlier maturing version of the Broad Mill Vine. It was created by selection and crossbreeding between Broad Mill Vine and Valdige to meet the need for a faster ripening cycle. The wines from Early Mill Vine are elegant, with fresh fruit aromas combined with delicate hints of spice.
The Melnik 1300 variety is a modern selection created in honour of the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state. It is a cross between Shiroka Melnik and Separavi, combining typical local characteristics with international influences. The wines of Melnik 1300 are full-bodied and rich, with deep flavours of black fruits, cocoa and vanilla.
Melnik 82 is another innovative variety resulting from the crossing of the Broad Melnik vine with Valdige. It offers exceptional harmony between freshness and complexity. The wines have distinctive flavours of berries, pepper and herbs, and are favoured by fans of dry red wines.
This varietal impresses with its deep red colour and expressive aromas of red berries. Again a cross-breed, Melnik Ruby is ideal for creating full-bodied and aromatic wines that capture the spirit of the region.
Sandanski Msket is the jewel among the white varieties of the region. It was created by the method of sexual hybridization by crossing the varieties of Shiroka Melnishka loza and Tamyanka in 1963. The variety is extremely aromatic, with fresh notes of flowers, citrus and herbs. The variety is mainly grown to produce white and rosé wines, which are favoured in the summer months for their lightness and refreshing character.
Sandanski and Melnik are not just geographical places – they are real wine treasure troves that tell stories through every drop of wine. Thanks to its unique terroir and wealth of varieties, the region offers an experience that combines taste, history and tradition.
